Immigration Law CLE: The Basics of Representing Unaccompanied Children

The Harris County Attorney’s Office will host a CLE for attorneys interested in learning the Basics of Representing Unaccompanied Children in immigration detainer cases.

Topics will include:

-an overview of the sources of immigration law, its history, and how the law relates to children and their families

-a discussion of how the federal government processes and releases unaccompanied children apprehended by the immigration authorities

-a discussion of the legal requirements, relevant policies and procedure for obtaining Special Immigrant Juvenile Status

-the basics of asylum law and preparing and presenting an asylum claim before USCIS and EOIR

-tips for how to most effectively build rapport and interview child clients and common ethical considerations in representing children.
